Homer the Bear Press Release

Remembering Homer, Midland Zoo's Oldest Polar Bear

After years of playing, hunting trout, and educating zoo visitors, Homer enjoyed his last meal and passed away this morning at the ripe age of 16.

Polar bears have thrived at Midland since 1985 and Homer, according to zookeeper Sara N. Getty, was a "very curious and playful polar" who will be missed terribly.

While the cause of death is still unknown, zoo director Chris P. Bacon has promised a swift investigation as "animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo."

Staff veterinarian Dr. Shanda Lear confirmed that a necropsy will take place to determine the cause of death.
