Final feature research

The topic of my final feature is about the rise of female skateboarders, which is especially timely since skateboarding will be in the Olympics next summer in Tokyo. The competition will feature both male and female skateboarders, including the 11-year-old skateboarding phenomenon Sky Brown.

My three sources will be:

1. Lara K. Botto, a sponsored female skateboarder living in the Bay Area
2. Zainab Alkenany, a female skateboarder and amateur fashion designer
3. Lacey Baker, a queer female professional skateboarder and Olympic competitor

I plan to ask them:

1. What is about skateboarding that appealed to you?
2. Have you ever encountered hostility from male skaters? How did you respond?
3. What's something about being a female skateboarder that everyone should know?

Here are two stories that have been published in magazines or newspapers that are related to my topic:

The number of female skateboarders has grown, but the sexism of other sports — including pay disparities and limited sponsorship opportunities — persists.

Women did not start competing in the X-Games, one of the world's biggest skateboarding competitions, until 2002. And, even then, women did not receive the same amount of prize money as men until 2006.

Even though more male skaters receive more marketing, female professionals receive more mainstream attention. The industry as a whole undervalues their talent.

This interview with Lacey Baker, a queer female professional skateboarder who's headed to the Olympics, is fantastic.

She discusses some of the sexism and misogyny that's already prevalent in the sport but doesn't seem remotely bothered by it.

Her perspective as a queer skateboarder is important and she goes to great lengths to distinguish her experience from that of Brian Anderson, a male skateboarder who recently came out as gay.
